We previously reported that Roman vs John Cena was moved to No Mercy due to Cena’s unavailability for the Survivor Series. In the eyes of most fans, the logical thing to do would be to book that match at the next major PPV after Survivor Series, that being the Royal Rumble, followed by WrestleMania. However, this is not possible, given the future plans for both superstars.
As we have documented, Roman Reigns is set to face Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 34. Meanwhile John Cena is set to move back to the SmackDown brand when he returns and will defeat Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship. The sole reason Cena was moved to Raw was so that the WWE would have a Reigns vs Cena program on TV to compensate for the absence of Brock Lesnar. The plan was NOT to put Reigns vs Cena on a show which already had Lesnar on it.
However, given that Cena isn’t returning to Raw when he returns, the company had no choice but to book the match for No Mercy.
